Group Work

Music is the language of the soul.

The group experiences the creative exploration of the GIM - Guided Imagery and Music Process.

The group experience of GIM can be as different as each group experiencing this wonderful modality.

Most often this broad framework is followed:

1. Introduction, choosing a theme and setting an intention

2. Relaxation

3. Music: Listening to recorded music in a relaxed state

4. Art expression of the journey - Mandala drawing

5. Group sharing

1. Pre-talk:

The GIM journey is steered in a specific direction by choosing an intention. Depending on the nature of the group, the group will decide on a common theme, or goal for their journey.

In some groups the GIM fellow will chose the intention for the group. The group may also be conducted not to follow a specific intention, but to be open to what needs to happen.

In some groups poetry, a story or inspirational quote can be used to set the scene.

2. Relaxation/Induction:

Next the GIM journey starts with a deep relaxation process. The clients remain seated throughout the process, or can lie down if the setting and client group allows that. Clients are invited to close their eyes, and become aware of their breathing. The GIM fellow can use a variety of methods to relax the clients, the emphasis is on the awareness of the body, and letting any tension flow out of the body, leaving it relaxed. This state is often called an altered state of awareness, as clients are not asleep: the body is deeply relaxed, and the mind is aware in a different way to the normal state of consciousness.

3. The GIM journey:

When the group is ready, i.e relaxed, the journey starts. The music plays. A very large variety of recorded music can be used for GIM journeys. As the group listens to a carefully chosen piece of music, in this relaxed state, they have different experiences triggered by the music. Many people see images, similar to dreams. Others are reminded of places or people they know. These images are often accompanied by physical body sensations, such as feeling warm or cold, and of course various emotions.

Images say more than a thousand words, they are messages to us from our sub-conscious mind. Many times one does not even realise the depth of the picture which one is shown until many days, or weeks later.

4. Mandala drawing:

The clients draw a picture of their image or experience once the journey has ended. This serves to remind them of their experience as they take it home with them. Most often big white sheets of paper are used. The clients draw their images with pastels or chalk pastels.

5. Group sharing:

The GIM process ends with the group sharing their images and feelings to integrate the experience.

This process gives one precious insights into oneself as well as the other group members, by using the language of symbol to communicate with one another.

Accessing ones inner wisdom and creativity is incredibly motivating and inspiring, and leads us on a wonderful journey of self development.

GIM group work is suitable for a variety of groups, and very adaptable.

For example: support groups in clinical settings, corporate team building, personal - development groups, religious and spiritual groups, schools and tertiary institutions.
